Need Ideas for Cheap Mods on My '03 Mazda Protege Hatchback… What Would You Do?

Just picked up an '03 Mazda Protege hatchback and I’m looking to make some budget-friendly mods. What upgrades would you suggest without breaking the bank? Here’s a photo

Start with some window tints and maybe new wheels. Keep it simple and reliable. Performance mods can mess with its durability.

Agreed. Also, give it a good detailing. A nice polish and that red paint will shine!

Honestly, I’d do nothing and just hope it keeps running. It’s 22 years old, after all.

Exactly. Use it as a reliable daily driver. Spending money on anything besides maintenance isn’t worth it. Check fluids, look at the brakes and tires, and save your cash.

Hey, plenty of cars out there are older and still going strong.

Sure, but add seven more years and then start modding it.

@Marin
Why would you even suggest that? Mods are a risk on old cars.

Exactly, mods might sound fun but could backfire. Keep it simple.

True. Mods are tempting but can lead to headaches down the road.

Invest in some good tires first. Maybe upgrade the wheels later.

I had this exact car and loved it! Tires are a must. The stock size is odd and limits your options, but a small upsize opens up better tire choices. I swapped to some Pirellis, and it made a huge difference. If you have a manual, try Redline gearbox oil for smoother shifting. Great car overall—handled well for FWD!

@Kirby
I had one too. Swapped wheels and tires from a newer Mazda. The size change made all the difference.

Turn it into a safari build or wasteland look!

Nah, I want to keep it looking nice and running well. My insurance is already high, so I need to take care of it.

Upgrade the brakes. On an older car, that could save your life one day.

Honestly, just get ready to battle rust. These cars have a tendency to rust out.

This car is probably older than you are. Why not just leave it stock?

Because I can’t afford a newer car and want to keep this one in good shape. It’s special to me.

Fair enough, but just remember: modding an old economy car like this is throwing money into a pit. Maintenance is key, not performance upgrades.

@Harley
I hear you. I’m planning on maintaining it and maybe adding some minor mods. No crazy builds, just want it to last.
