Disagree. Old Mazda engines can be made fun and reliable if done right. Even beginners can learn. My girlfriend knew nothing about cars, and now she’s done a head gasket swap. Mazdas are great to learn on.
What engine does it have? If it’s the 2.0 FS, you can make some improvements. A cheap brake upgrade is using Mazdaspeed3 calipers. For a performance boost, swap in higher compression pistons from the 1.8 FP engine. Also, consider budget coilovers for better handling.

It’s got the 2.0 FS. I already did an oil change, checked the fluids, and rust-proofed the underside. What should I replace next? Also, any year Mazdaspeed3 brakes work?

The first-gen Mazdaspeed3 brakes should bolt on. As for engine stuff, don’t stress too much. These engines are tough. If you ever want to turbo it, there are budget options. Just don’t go crazy and keep up with maintenance.
