Need Ideas for Cheap Mods on My '03 Mazda Protege Hatchback… What Would You Do?

I hear you. I’m planning on maintaining it and maybe adding some minor mods. No crazy builds, just want it to last.

If that’s your plan, focus on basic upkeep. Reliable mods aren’t easy to come by. Just be careful and don’t push it too hard.

@Harley
Disagree. Old Mazda engines can be made fun and reliable if done right. Even beginners can learn. My girlfriend knew nothing about cars, and now she’s done a head gasket swap. Mazdas are great to learn on.

Wash it, clay bar, and throw on some ceramic coating like Armor Shield IX. Makes a big difference.

Upgrade the rotors, pads, and get quality tires. Also, check your spark plugs and wires.

Rust protection is key. These cars don’t last long without it. Lots have rusted away where I live.

Same here in southern Ontario. My first car was a 2002 Protege5, learned stick on it!

Keep it clean, stick to maintenance, and don’t mod it too much. Mods can shorten its lifespan.

Thanks! I’m trying to keep it running well. Would straight piping it hurt reliability? Also, what should I focus on replacing first?

@Micah
Straight piping a 4-cylinder? It’ll sound awful.

Yeah, it’ll sound like a broken tractor. Everyone around you will hate it.

I kinda like the idea of it popping and crackling. Might be loud, but I don’t mind.

I really want to keep it running well. What should I replace first?

Get some cool wheels and tint the windows. Gives it a fresh look.

Tint and maybe some 18-inch Mazdaspeed3 wheels.

What engine does it have? If it’s the 2.0 FS, you can make some improvements. A cheap brake upgrade is using Mazdaspeed3 calipers. For a performance boost, swap in higher compression pistons from the 1.8 FP engine. Also, consider budget coilovers for better handling.

@Terry
It’s got the 2.0 FS. I already did an oil change, checked the fluids, and rust-proofed the underside. What should I replace next? Also, any year Mazdaspeed3 brakes work?

The first-gen Mazdaspeed3 brakes should bolt on. As for engine stuff, don’t stress too much. These engines are tough. If you ever want to turbo it, there are budget options. Just don’t go crazy and keep up with maintenance.

@Terry
What else under the hood should I replace soon to keep it running well? I know I need new brakes and rotors.

I know a guy who turbocharged one of these up to 500hp. I’ll send you his details. He’s super helpful if you need advice.

Do some engine mods for a bit more pep, then get window tints and some budget wheels.
