Is this a good deal if the head doesn't crack?

I found a 2021 CX-5 Sport with 47k miles for $18,000. Should I consider getting an extended warranty to protect against the issue with the porous or cracked heads on this model?

Yes, I think you should definitely get an extended warranty.

Aren’t the cracked heads covered until 80k miles? I’m not really sure though.

I’m not certain, but having an extended warranty is usually a good idea.

Is that model the Sport or the Touring? That price seems high for the Sport.

It’s the Sport. The price is just above KBB’s private party value and significantly lower than the fair market value on sites like Cargurus or Carfax. It actually sold a couple of days ago. I’m in the Northeast, upstate NY for context.

If your model is included in Mazda’s TSB, you might automatically get an extended warranty for up to 100k miles or 10 years. My 2018 CX-9 is at the dealer right now for a cracked cylinder head, and Mazda is covering the full repair cost of $8,200.

@Darby
What’s the mileage on yours? Do you know when these typically fail, or could it happen after 100k miles?

I had the problem at 64k miles. I’ve seen others report issues as early as 20k miles. So, there’s really no way to tell.

It’s good that it’s happening while still under warranty, but it definitely makes me hesitant to buy one.

I think it’s the 2017-2019 models that are affected.

I saw a TSB for 2018-2021, which is why I’m considering the 2017 models.

@Darby
How did you find out you had a cracked cylinder head?

I noticed coolant was leaking, so I took it to the dealer for a diagnosis.

Isn’t the Sport the base model? Are you sure you want that?

I was interested in it for that price, yes.

I say go for it. I always get the extended warranty for peace of mind. You can cancel it later if you find you don’t need it or change vehicles. When I bought my used F150 from my Mazda dealer, I got the extended warranty, and when I traded it for my Tacoma, I was able to cancel it and get a partial refund.

What do you mean by heads cracking?

Mazda’s cylinder heads often crack between cylinders 2 and 3, and it’s a common issue.

Is this happening with specific engines? Petrol or diesel? Thanks!
