Hi everyone, I’m working on a Mazda 3 hatchback. I recently replaced the TCM, and right after, these P2004 and P2009 codes showed up. We replaced the air intake solenoid with one from a scrap yard, and the codes cleared temporarily after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. However, when I took it for a smog check, the codes were still there, and it failed. I’ve driven it around since then, but the codes still appear even though the check engine light is off. What should I do now?
What year is your Mazda?
Did the smog test fail because of ‘permanent codes’?

It’s a 2010, and yes, the smog test failed because of those codes, even though I replaced the part.

Thanks for the info. Are you planning to sell the car soon?
@Teo
Yeah, I want to sell it as soon as the codes clear. I need it to pass smog properly before selling it. They kind of let it slide this time, but I want to make sure it’s all good.

If it technically passed, you might want to sell it soon. Smog certificates are valid for 90 days, so you’re on a timer. Keep in mind, though, the smog inspector doesn’t control if it passes or fails—the system decides based on the codes.

Wait, are these showing as permanent codes or pending codes on your scanner? Can you share your smog test report?
@Teo
I’ll grab the report and post it in about an hour. Thanks for your help so far.
@Teo
I posted the smog test printout on my profile. Here’s the link: https://www.reddit.com/u/lilgreengoddess/s/j5ttuLmAP0

Hmm, that’s not a passing smog certificate. That’s just a pretest result. Did they give you anything official saying it passed?
@Teo
They did, but I can’t find it now. I checked online, and it shows the registration is pending. Would the pass sheet have detailed anything specific?

The pass sheet would show any permanent codes but not pending ones. If yours were pending, it makes sense you passed after clearing them. Permanent codes wouldn’t allow you to pass the same day.
If the codes are still popping up now, your problem might not be fixed yet. Pending codes could turn into confirmed ones, which would trigger the check engine light again.
