I’m thinking about upgrading from my 2021 CX-50 to a CX-70. I’m looking at the Turbo S Premium trim, but it’s much more expensive than what I’ve ever spent on a car. Is the price difference really worth it? I’m getting nervous about the cost… anyone with experience here?
When we bought my wife’s CX-50, I also test drove a CX-90 after seeing the 70 in the showroom. After getting the 50 home, I started thinking about just getting a second one. It felt like enough car, and I really liked her Turbo Premium. But then, I realized we’d need more space for road trips. We tested loading up our suitcases, and they didn’t all fit in the 50. I’m glad we got the 70. It’s comfortable, powerful, and fuel efficient. I’m excited to take it on the open road next spring.
@Rin
Exactly why I chose the 70. The 50 is still a compact SUV and didn’t have the space I needed.
Do you actually need the extra space?

That’s the main reason. Neither of us has kids, but my wife’s car is the only one with enough space. We’re both tired of that.

My uncle has the CX-50, and I just picked up the 70. I’m picking up a 75” TV tomorrow and we’ve got pets that we sometimes need to take on trips. The extra space is a must for our family of four. But for my retired uncle and aunt, the CX-50 is plenty of space. It really depends on your lifestyle.
Man, you really should test drive one first. Going from a CX-3 to a CX-5 felt like a huge jump. I can’t imagine what it’d be like going to a CX-70. If you like your 3 and just need more space, the 50 is probably the closest you’ll get. I like the 5, but it feels a generation behind in tech.
@Shai
I felt the same when I went from my 2018 Miata to my 3. I haven’t driven a 70 yet, but I did enjoy the space in the 50. I’ve heard the 70 is much more refined and comfortable overall.

The 70 feels like a giant boat compared to the 50.
Honestly, it’s not really a ‘premium’ vehicle when you look at what $40K gets you in other models. If you’re comparing the N/A 2.5L, sure, there’s a price difference, but when you compare it to a Turbo CX-50, the CX-50 seems overpriced in comparison.
I don’t own a new Mazda, but I’ve done a lot of research and visited dealerships recently. I like the CX-50 because it’s close to a station wagon in terms of shape and size. Would I jump to the CX-70? Not sure. I like the interior of the 70, but I don’t need the extra space and I don’t want to spend over $50k on a Mazda. Coming from the BMW world, I’d rather get a slightly used BMW X5 or another German brand at that price range. If you’re looking at the Turbo or N/A CX-50, I’d recommend the Turbo. The Premium Plus trim gives you a lot of features for $40-45k, especially if buying new. I was considering the Turbo, but then I heard about the CX-50 hybrid. I waited, thinking the trim levels would be the same, and was hoping to get the hybrid Premium Plus trim for better fuel savings. But then Mazda stripped the hybrid models. The hybrid versions are only available in a few trims, and they don’t have the same features as the regular ones. It was a bit of a letdown. Anyway, get the Turbo if you can. I don’t think the extra $5k for the CX-70 is worth it. Some things to think about: Are you planning to keep the car long term? Or are you just going to switch cars once the loan’s paid off? If you know you’ll get bored of the car after two years, it might not be worth the extra cost. Will you mind if your $50k SUV gets scratched or damaged in the area you live? For me, the CX-50 works because it’s smaller and has plastic cladding to protect against scrapes and small accidents. It’s an urban SUV that’s easy to deal with day to day.
