So I saw Mazda’s new ICONIC SP concept, and wow, it’s a blend of their classic rotary tech with a slick electric vibe. It won some awards too, like EV Concept of the Year at the 2024 Top Gear.com awards. Seems like it’s got that rotary engine as a range extender… anyone know more about how that works?
Yeah, I saw that! Love how they kept the rotary tech alive. From what I read, the rotary engine basically recharges the battery instead of powering the car directly. Smart move to keep it efficient.

That’s cool! So, it’s like a hybrid kinda, right? Uses gas but only to charge?
@Reece
Exactly! The rotary isn’t the main power source. It just charges up the battery when it runs low, so it gets better range without needing a gas engine to drive.
@Reece
Kinda reminds me of the BMW i3’s range extender setup.
Anyone else think the design is awesome? The sharp lines and low profile look so futuristic! Almost feels like it’s moving even when it’s parked.

Totally agree! Mazda nailed the design. It’s got that sporty feel but still classy.
@Kit
Right? The whole ‘Soul of Motion’ thing they talk about actually shows here.
@Kit
I saw some pics online, and the LED headlights really stand out. So intense.

Not gonna lie, it kinda gives me Batmobile vibes… anyone else see it?
Can someone explain what ‘dual-rotor generator’ actually means? I keep reading it but IDK how it’s different from a regular EV engine.

Good question! So the dual-rotor part means it’s got two rotary engines working together to recharge the battery, which makes it super smooth and efficient without the noise of older rotary engines.
@Kai
Ohhh, makes sense now. So it’s quieter but still has that rotary ‘oomph’?

I think it’s all about extending the range. The rotary just charges up when needed, so it’s not all battery like other EVs.
Mazda really went all in with the interior too, right? I heard it’s minimal but high-tech, kinda like the Teslas.

Yup, seems like it’s got a full digital cockpit. Minimal but driver-focused… classic Mazda style.
@Ozzie
Mazda’s good at making things simple but classy. Probably gonna feel awesome to drive!

Anyone know if they plan on actually producing it? Or is it gonna stay a concept?
@Kirby
I heard they’re testing the waters, so if there’s enough hype, maybe we’ll see it!
EV Concept of the Year? That’s huge! Mazda might actually stand out in the EV game now.
