I know this topic has been brought up before, but most of the discussions I found are about the CX-90 before the software fixes. I’m looking to understand the current situation.
We’ve driven both models and really like them. Both look great to us, and we feel Mazda is the right brand for our needs.
We are a bit more inclined toward the CX-9 because it has a long platform. Parts should be easy to find, and any issues are known.
The CX-90 has more technology, better MPG, and generally feels nicer to us, but it doesn’t have the same reliability factor (not saying it’s unreliable, just that it’s not a long-term known quantity).
There’s a 2022 CX-9 Touring nearby for $26k and a 2024 CX-90 for $34k. Is the CX-90 worth the extra $8k? Has anyone driven both and can share their thoughts?
At $34k, I would definitely choose the CX-90. I believe it’s $8k nicer, with a larger, more efficient engine and all the latest gadgets.
Plus, the CX-90 has better base features than the CX-9, at least here in Canada.
Honestly, the only advantages the CX-9 has are the lower price and its longer history. The main downside of the CX-90 is its higher cost and the recent “hot fixes” for the transmission software.
Mazda has had a good track record lately with no major issues on new models.
I would personally go for a higher trim CX-9. It’s still loaded with features where it counts and feels more compact to drive. Plus, I think it looks better.
The spark plug change interval is the same as the 4-cylinder CX-9 at 64k kilometers. Accessing the plugs is just a bit trickier than in the CX-9 since it takes only a few minutes to remove the piping that blocks the back plugs. However, Mazda requires using OEM spark plugs for the I6 and says that spark plug replacement should not be done by the vehicle owner, only by a trained Mazda technician.
@Reagan
Thanks a lot for the info! We really love the CX-9 (and the lower price is nice). The difference in MPG isn’t ideal, but it would take us a long time to make up the $8k difference in just fuel savings.
