2019 Mazda CX-5 with 35k miles needs a new cylinder head... is this normal?

I was surprised when the dealership told me my 2019 Mazda CX-5 with only 35,000 miles needs a new cylinder head. Thankfully, it’s still under warranty. Has anyone else experienced this issue? I noticed an oil leak, and when I told the receptionist, he immediately said it needed a new cylinder head.

I’ve always kept up with servicing my Mazda 3, but a few years ago I had the same issue while it was still under warranty.

Yeah, it’s a common issue on both turbo and non-turbo engines. It should be covered under warranty. Once it’s fixed, the problem doesn’t usually return. Looks like yours is a non-turbo based on the part numbers.

@Wes
That’s good to know. I love my Mazda; I’ve been driving it for two years with no problems. The oil leak has been a real headache lately. I’m glad it’s getting fixed. I first took it to Firestone, and they spent two weeks doing nothing.

@Wei
Firestone isn’t the best, in my experience. I actually work at a place that used to be a Firestone, but now we’re independent.

@Wei
Free brand new engine, lucky you!

I had a 2018 model that had the same issue. Mazda has a Technical Service Bulletin about it. It’s not rare, but it doesn’t happen to all of them.

It’s odd that it needs a cylinder head at 35k miles, and that the dealer said that just based on an oil leak. Maybe get a second opinion.

Looks like I’m not alone.

There’s a TSB for this.

Does the TSB specifically address early failure? What’s the TSB reference?

@Perry
Yes, it specifically addresses premature failure. It’s TSB number SA-052-24. You can find it on the NHTSA website.

It’s either the cylinder head that often cracks between cylinders 2 and 3, or the front cover, but the crack is a much more serious leak than the front cover.

@Val
I read that Mazda had a casting issue with cylinder heads in the 2018 models (maybe other years too), where they would crack near the exhaust manifold, causing oil to seep through. I think newer models have a redesigned part.

We see a few of these each month at my dealership, usually with higher mileage than yours though.

Just a tip: if you want to show the engine, take that cover off.

I got mine replaced at 98,000 miles on a 2018 CX-5. Mazda covered it.

Had the cylinder head changed on my 2018 Mazda6 2.5T. It was leaking antifreeze, which is how I noticed it. Covered under warranty. Car has only 44,000 miles. I believe there’s a class-action lawsuit pending on this issue.

My girlfriend’s 2012 is on its second one. We’re getting rid of it this weekend.

Second what? Cylinder head? My 2013 Skyactiv-G has had no issues and has 139k miles on it.
