I saw something on the carfax for a car I’m considering and wanted to see if anyone knows more about it. The report shows ‘service contract claim’ three times: once at 4,600 miles, then at 9,700 miles, and finally at 11,700 miles before it was sold to a used dealership.
The car is a 2018 with 63,000 miles now. Has anyone bought a car with this kind of thing on the carfax? Did you have any problems later? Were the dealers open about what work was done?
I’m thinking maybe it’s stuff the warranty covered, but I don’t know for sure. Any advice on how to figure out exactly what these claims were about?
@Palmer
It could be anything, really. Sometimes it’s something small like a bushing; other times, it’s something bigger. It all depends on what the warranty covered and what repairs were needed.
If you’re buying used, always get a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic you trust. They’ll check the car and give you an idea of its current condition.
@Eli
What exactly is a bushing? Is it like regular maintenance stuff, like tire rotations? If it’s smaller things like that, I’d feel better about it. But having three claims in the first 15k miles makes me a bit nervous.
The car is 5 hours away, and I’ve got a shop there lined up for an inspection. They’ve got good reviews, but I don’t know them like I know my local mechanic, so it’s hard to fully trust them.
@Palmer
A bushing is a small part used to reduce friction, guide movement, or support other parts. It’s not usually something critical. They wear out over time, so replacing them isn’t unusual, but I doubt three failed in 15k miles.
Honestly, without the actual repair orders, it’s just guessing. It could’ve been something minor like a stuck window switch or maybe a rim replacement if the owner hit a pothole. You could try calling the selling dealer to see if they have any records or details about the repairs. That might give you a better idea.
