One year old CX30 needs a new engine… is this normal?

I leased a 2023 CX30 in October 2023. Yesterday, I started the car after shopping at Target, and it showed an engine malfunction message. I dropped it off at Mazda, and this morning they told me it needs a new engine. That seems strange for a car that’s only a year old, right?

It’s a lease, so it’s under warranty. Yeah, it’s annoying, but you don’t need to stress much. Once the lease ends, just hand it back and move on.

Sometimes these things happen. Manufacturing errors are rare, but they’re why warranties exist. It’s bad luck, but not unheard of.

It’d be nice if more people realized this.

Exactly!

Definitely not normal unless it’s some old, heavily abused car… or maybe a Hyundai. Did the dealer say what caused this issue?

They said the compression test showed the cylinders are at 80 when they should be at least 115–120.

Haha, the Hyundai comment made me laugh!

@Lee
I can’t stand Hyundai. I had one and it caused a major accident. Long story, but I’ll never touch them again.

My brother had a Kia, and one day the engine literally exploded. A connecting rod shot right out the side. Since then, I tell everyone to avoid Hyundai and Kia like the plague.

@Lee
Hyundai cars are just cheap garbage. I wouldn’t go near one.

Why all the hate on Hyundai, though?

They had huge problems with the 2.4 and 2.0 engines in the Sonata a few years back. It’s been resolved, but now there’s the Kia Boys stuff where cars without immobilizers are getting stolen left and right. It’s wrecked their reputation in some places.

@Fin
It’s crazy because Hyundai already has immobilizers on their Canadian cars. They should’ve added them here too.

They went with a software update instead. No idea how good it is, but the damage is already done. People saw TikToks on how to steal them, and now even cars with push-to-start are getting targeted.

@Fin
I had a Kia but traded it in for a Mazda. Feels like a big improvement to me.

I wouldn’t call it an upgrade. Maybe more of a trade-off depending on what features you care about. Kia has better tech like lane assist and remote start. My CX-5 feels nice, but my old Kia had way more convenience features.

@Hollis
Fair point. I do like Mazda’s build quality more, but yeah, Kia’s tech was better.

@Fin
It’s mostly an issue with Hyundai in the US. Doesn’t seem as bad elsewhere.

@Fin
My insurance agent told me they only insured my wife’s Elantra because I already had a policy with them. The car’s value tanked because it’s hard to get insurance for it now.
